f(x) (/ˌɛf ˈɛks/; Korean: 에프엑스) is a multi-national K-Pop girl group formed by S.M. Entertainment in 2009.
Initially debuting as a five-member group, the group is currently composed of four members: Victoria, Amber, Luna, and Krystal.
The group have been recognized as "the most reliably risk-taking act in K-pop"[1] due to their eclectic, electropop sound and their experimental fashion.[2] Each member has also participated in other forms of entertainment, such as acting and television hosting.
f(x) is one of the few K-pop groups to receive international recognition, as they were the first K-pop act to perform at South by Southwest[3] and their widely acclaimed second album, Pink Tape, was the only K-pop album chosen by the American music channel Fuse to be among the "The 41 Best Albums" of 2013.[4]
History[]
Casting and pre-debut[]
Sulli was the first member to join S.M. Entertainment. Prior to joining the company, she debuted as a child actress in 2005 when she was selected to play young Princess Seonhwa of Silla in the SBS television drama, Ballad of Seodong.[5] Later that year, she auditioned for S.M., and was accepted as trainee, where she eventually lived in a dormitory with Tiffany and Taeyeon until they debuted as members of Girls' Generation in 2007.[6]
Although Krystal was first scouted by an S.M. agent in 2000 (while she and her family were on a family visit to Korea), she did not officially join the company until she auditioned in 2006, and was accepted as a trainee.[7] However, prior to joining the S.M., she earned a small role in Shinhwa's "Wedding March (Neoui Gyeoteseo 2)" (너의 곁에서 2) music video.[8]
Luna was also recruited in 2006, after an S.M. agent saw her perform on the television program Truth Game.[9]
Victoria was spotted by one of S.M.'s agents at a Beijing dance competition in September 2007, and joined the company later that year.[10]
Amber was the last member to join the company, having been cast through the S.M. Global Auditions in Los Angeles, California in 2008.[11]
2009: Debut, "LA chA TA", "Chocolate Love", and "Chu~♥"[]
f(x) was first introduced through a debut teaser movie released on August 24, 2009, being dubbed "Asia's Pop Dance Group".[12]
Their debut single, "LA chA TA", was released on September 1, 2009.[13] The next day, the group held their first live performance at a showcase held at the Samseong-dong Fashion Center.[14] On September 5, 2009, they marked their first broadcast performance by appearing on the MBC's music show Show! Music Core.[15]
In October 2009, f(x) promoted the LG Chocolate cellphone alongside label mates Girls' Generation. Both groups released their own rendition of the song "Chocolate Love", with f(x)'s "electro-pop" version being released on October 8, 2009.[16]
Their second single, "Chu~♥", was released on November 9, 2009.[17] A month later, the group appeared as special guests at Girls' Generation's "Into the New World" Concert held at the Olympic Fencing Gymnasium on December 19 and 20, 2009.[18]
2010: Chinese Debut, NU ABO, and Amber's Hiatus[]
In January 2010, f(x) collaborated with Chinese boy band M.I.C. to promote the LG Cyon cellphone in China. They released a Chinese cover of "Lollipop", written by Julius Dixson and Beverly Ross, on January 12.[19]
Later that year, the group released their first extended play, NU ABO, was released on May 4. Consisting of six tracks, the lead single "NU ABO" topped various online music portal charts in Korea,[20] and also gave the group their first number one on the Gaon digital singles chart.[21] The group held their first performance of the song on KBS's Music Bank on May 7. They also performed "ME+U" on multiple music programs.[22]
During promotions for "NU ABO", Amber suffered a severe ankle injury, and went on hiatus for the rest of the year in order to properly recover.[23]
The remaining four members began performing "Mr. Boogie" as the EP's second single on music shows starting on July 17. The group participated in the SMTown Live '10 World Tour on August 21 at the Seoul Jamsil Olympic Stadium. They also performed in Tokyo, Shanghai, Los Angeles, and Paris stops of the tour, marking the first time the group had performed out of Asia.[24]
The group was later announced to have been signed to Japan's Avex Entertainment, with their albums released under the label in Japan, Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong.[25]
2011: Amber's return, Pinocchio, and Hot Summer[]
In early 2011, Amber returned to the group from her hiatus, having fully recovered from her ankle injury.[26] The group's first full-length studio album Pinocchio, was released on April 20. The group held their first performance of lead single "Pinocchio (Danger)" on KBS' Music Bank on April 22.[27] The group also performed "Gangsta Boy" on various music programs.[28] The group went on to win their first music show award (winning a total of eight) during Pinocchio promotions.
They subsequently re-released the album on June 14 under the title Hot Summer. The album included one new song, "Hot Summer", a remake of the Monrose song written by Thomas Troelsen and Remee,[29] as well as three previously released digital singles "LA chA TA", "Chu~♥", and "Is It Ok?".[30]
In August, f(x) released an OST song called "Garagabana" for the online game Bust-a-Move by Puzzle Bobble.[31] In December, they released an English song entitled "1,2,3" as part of the 2011 Winter SMTown – The Warmest Gift Christmas album.[32]
2012: Electric Shock and Japanese debut[]
f(x) released their second extended play titled Electric Shock on June 10, 2012.[33][34] Upon its release, the EP received widespread acclaim from South Korean critics, many commending its cohesive production and f(x)'s newfound sonic direction.[35] On Jun 14, the group began promotions for the album, starting on Mnet's M! Countdown. They performed both "Electric Shock" and "Jet" as a part of their special comeback stage. The group eventually achieved nine wins on various music shows.
The group then debuted in Japan a few months later, with their debut song being a Japanese remake of "Hot Summer" on August 5, 2012.[36] The track was eventually selected as the main advertising song for the Uminoie Resort.[37]
On November 30, f(x) received the "Best Dance Performance - Female Group" award for "Electric Shock" at the 2012 MAMA Awards.[38]
2013: International Recognition, Pink Tape, and First Concert[]
In January 2013, the songs "Electric Shock" and "Jet" were both nominated for "Best Dance and Electronic Song" at the 10th Annual Korean Music Awards (with "Electric Shock" eventually winning the award).[39] In regards to the two songs being nominated in the same category, a representative of the KMAs stated, "This is due to the corresponding songs having excellent music reviews and rather than disregarding them because it is from the same artist, we chose to recognize their excellence".[40] In the same year, f(x) was also awarded the "Digital Bonsang" award at the Golden Disk Awards and Seoul Music Awards,[41] as well as the "MBC Music Star Award" at Melon Music Awards.[42]
In March, f(x) became the first K-pop artist to perform at the South by Southwest (popularly known as SXSW), a media festival held annually in Austin, Texas.[43] The group were listed by Fuse as one of the "30 Must-See Acts" at the event.[44] They performed as part of the first annual "K-POP NIGHT OUT at SXSW" event.
During this trip to the U.S., they also filmed a Funny or Die sketch with American actress Anna Kendrick.[45] These events were documented and shown in the group's variety show Go f(x)!. Later in the year, f(x) performed at the Hong Kong Dome Festival on July 1.
On July 29, the group's second full-length album Pink Tape was released. Their showcase, f(x) Music Spoiler - Play! Pink Tape, was held through Naver Music on the same day. The album peaked at number one on multiple music charts internationally, including Billboard's World Albums Chart[46] and Gaon's Album Chart.[47]
The album also received critical acclaim, most notably being described as "experimental, steeped in quirky, boundary-pushing electronic sounds with woozy harmonies",[48] and became the only K-pop album released in 2013 to be ranked by Fuse as one of "The 41 Best Albums of 2013".[49] f(x) began promotions for the album starting with M! Countdown on July 25, performing lead single "Rum Pum Pum Pum". f(x) also performed "Airplane" and "Shadow" on multiple music programs.[50][51] "Rum Pum Pum Pum" eventually achieved four wins on various music shows[52] while also ranking #3 on Billboard's "20 Best K-Pop Songs of 2013".[53]
At the end of the year, f(x) held their first concert titled SMTOWN WEEK f(x) & EXO Christmas Wonderland, which was a joint concert with labelmates EXO. The concert was held on December 24 and 25 at KINTEX and Ilsan.[54]
2014: Red Light and Sulli's Hiatus[]
In early 2014, f(x) won the "Group Artist" award at 20th Korean Entertainment Arts Awards,[55] "Disk Bonsang" at the 28th Golden Disk Awards,[56] as well as "Best Overseas Artist Performance" at Yin Yue Feng Yun Bang Awards held in China.[57]
f(x)'s third studio album Red Light was released on July 7, 2014.[58] The album received critical acclaim,[59][60] though received some mixed reviews regarding the album's dark and eerie concept. In response, f(x) stated that they saw the concept as a new challenge and as a progression of showing their mature side.[61] The music video for "Red Light" was released on July 3, and was ranked as the most viewed K-pop videos in America and around the world during the month of July.[62] The group held their first performance of "Red Light" on July 3 on Mnent's M! Countdown.[63] The group also performed "Milk" and "All Night" on various music programs.[64][65]
On July 17, f(x) performed on MNet's M!Countdown without Sulli, with SM Entertainment saying that Sulli was sick and thus was unable to perform.[66] However, when Sulli did not appear in the next few Red Light promotions and f(x)'s Korean promotion schedule was abruptly cleared for the rest of the month, it led to speculation that Sulli would be leaving the group (or that the group itself would be disbanding).[67]
On July 24, 2014 SM Entertainment posted an official statement on the group's homepage, stating that due to Sulli becoming "mentally and physically exhausted from the continuous, malicious comments and false rumors" that has been spread about her in the past year, she would be taking a temporary hiatus from the entertainment industry (though she would still remain a member of the group).[68] The remaining members would also focus on their solo activities and continue any group activities without Sulli for the time being.[69]
Sulli's final performance with the group was on Inkigayo on July 20, 2015, though the performance was pre-recorded a week prior to the episode airing.[70][71]
During August, Pitchfork listed "Shadow", "Rum Pum Pum Pum", and "Red Light" as part of the best 20 essential K-pop songs in recent years.[72][73]
2015: Summer Special, Sulli's Departure, and 4 Walls[]
The group's first physical Japanese single Summer Special Pinocchio / Hot Summer, was released on July 22, 2015.[74] It included the Japanese versions of both "Hot Summer" and "Pinocchio", and a bonus DVD containing the Japanese music videos of both songs.
On August 7, it was announced that Sulli had officially withdrawn from the group to focus on an acting career, and that the group will continue to promote as four members with SM managing Sulli's acting endeavors.[75][76]
On August 9, the group held their first official stage as a 4-member group at the 2015 London Korean Film Festival: Imagine Your Korea event, giving a free performance at Trafalgar Square to celebrate the festival.[77][78]
On October 19, SMTOWN created a new Instagram account called "f(x) - 4 WALLS"[79] in order to promote f(x)'s new comeback (and first as a four member group). From October 21 to 26, an art gallery located in the Itaewon District and called "4 Walls: An Exhibit" showcased the individual member's teaser videos on each of the exhibit's four walls.[80] Victoria's solo teasers were exhibited on October 21,[81][82] Luna's on October 22,[83][84] Krystal's on October 23,[85][86] Amber's on October 24,[87][88] the group's on October 25,[89][90] and the "4 Walls" music video teaser on October 26.[91][92][93][94]
On October 27, the group's fourth full-length album 4 Walls was released.[95] The album received both critical acclaim and commercial success.[96][97] The album also became the group's highest selling album in their career.[98]
The group held their first performance of lead single "4 Walls" on Mnet's M!Countdown on October 29.[99] The group also performed "Diamond" on various music shows.[100] The group would go on to win five awards on various music shows.[101]
On December 2, f(x) appeared at the 2015 MAMA Awards (though Victoria was not able to attend due to her individual activities).[102] The group performed with Pet Shop Boys, performing a medley of "4 Walls" (Remix) and "What Have I Done To Deserve This".[103][104] The group would also win the "Global Fan Choice Award" (Female Artist) award at the ceremony.[105]
On December 6, S.M. Entertainment revealed that the group, alongside labelmates Red Velvet and BoA, would take part in a special winter music project, entitled Winter Garden.[106] f(x) contributed with the song titled "12:25 (Wish List)", which was released on December 15.[107]
2016: 1st Solo Concert Tour, SM Station, and 4 Walls/Cowboy[]
On January, f(x) held their first solo concert titled DIMENSION 4 – Docking Station.[108] The concert was held on January 29-31 at Olympic Hall, Olympic Park, and later had six performances in Japan a month later. At the end of the final South Korean concert on January 30, f(x) announced the group's fanclub name, which is Me U (which can be written mathematically as μ).[109]
In July, the group released a digital single as part of SM Entertainment's SM Station Project. The song "All Mine" was the 25th single from the project, and was released on July 22, 2016.[110]
The group held two encore concerts of their DIMENSION 4 – Docking Station were held on November 2 and 3, 2016, in Yokohama, Japan. Around the same time, the group released their first original Japanese single, "Cowboy", which was packaged with a Japanese version of "4 Walls". The single album, titled 4 Walls/Cowboy, came in two versions, a CD only version and a CD + DVD version.[111]
